Start with your customers’ ordinary visits

A stamp target should make sense for the way people buy from you. A daily takeaway and an occasional family meal have different rhythms. Observe typical qualifying visits before choosing the target.

There is no universal stamp count that guarantees repeat business. A shorter journey may be easy to understand, but it must still be affordable to honour.

Match the journey to the reward

List the reward’s direct cost and the purchases that qualify. Use the reward-cost worksheet in Choose a café loyalty reward to check your assumptions. Include packaging and preparation constraints.

Choose a target your staff can explain quickly: “Collect eight stamps on eligible drinks, then redeem the drink shown on your card.” Avoid hidden steps or a promise that changes at checkout.

Keep progress honest

Customers should see the actual visits they have earned. Do not disguise an inflated target as free progress or invent urgency to make a reward feel closer. Clear terms and accurate stamps are more useful than a clever-looking trick.

Staff should approve a stamp only after verifying a qualifying purchase. The enrollment QR is an invitation to join, not proof that a purchase happened.

Review without moving the goalposts

After launch, look at repeat visits, reward redemptions and delivery cost together. Record the period you reviewed and any operational changes. Ask whether customers understand what they are collecting toward.

If you need a different target, create clear new terms for new cards. Honour existing customers’ published reward journey rather than erasing progress.

Your next action

Choose one target, one reward and one qualifying-purchase rule. Write them together. Have a staff member explain the journey without extra instructions; revise anything they cannot explain clearly.

One idea is enough to start.
Try it on your next shift.
